Nutrition is the fundamental base of Naturopathic Medicine that provides the body with basic energy metabolism in the form of calories through protein, grains, legumes, nuts/seeds, seaweeds and vegetables. Because the body evolves and exists as an energy system, the body's needs can be obtained from its natural environment. We as human organisms are created to acquire nutrients from natural food sources found in the natural environment. Therefore, naturopaths encourage all patients to eat as close to the earth as possible. The body is best suited to utilize food in its most natural form.
In the initial examination, the clinician evaluates the patient's current food plan. Then a revised nutrition plan is provided based on the level of illness. As the body begins to heal, more foods are added back into their lifestyle. Lao Tzu states: "What is deeply rooted in nature cannot be uprooted."
